Friday Freebie: Purple Psalter

One of the rarest types of medieval manuscripts are the Purple Psalters, made with materials so expensive it was only the very, very rich who could afford to get one made for themselves or as gifts for others.
This week's pattern was inspired by the background on a page of one of them. It wasn't easy to get the backstitched patterns correct - it's easy to get lost in the twists and turns the gold lines make. This being just the background meant that I also had to imagine how things continued behind the figures covering the lines, however the medieval artist was kind enough to leave some fully visible.

This pattern has almost 300 inches of backstitch in purple, gold and red - it's not for people who don't like backstitch.

The pattern calls for 002HL - Kreinik have announced that this colour is changing dye lot so please take care when using this that if you use thread from more than one spool you make sure they have the same dye lot! You can read even more about the change here.

You can find the pattern here

A few news items:
  • If you haven't seen it yet please do check out the Weavers Tapestry Band Sampler SAL I'm hosting next year.
    • The border will be given in November.
    • Friday Freebies WILL continue as per usual - this project is not replacing them.
  • I have an Instagram account where I post (almost) daily photos of what I'm working on that day - you can find it here.
I'll see you next week with another Friday freebie, and perhaps I'll also see you on Instagram or in the SAL FB group!

  1. I like those manuscript patterns you're doing - hard to imagine what kind of work must have been involved in making those all these years ago!

    1. Thanks! It took a lot of work to make all those manuscripts, aside from making the vellum (usually done by specialists as I understand it), they had to make their own inks, some from some pretty vile or poisonous substances.
